How to Read Canadian Career Wage and Employment Outlook Data

Use wage ranges, medians, outlooks and regional job information without mistaking a labour-market statistic for a personal guarantee.

Median is not starting pay

A median wage is the midpoint of the reported wage distribution. It is not necessarily what a new graduate earns, what every employer pays or the maximum available to an experienced worker.

Check whether the figure is hourly or annual, which geography it covers, the date of the record and whether the source reports the exact occupation or a broader occupational group.

Outlook and current postings measure different things

An employment outlook summarizes expected labour-market conditions over a stated period. Current postings show a snapshot of active recruitment. Either measure can change by city, employer, season and economic conditions.

A positive outlook does not guarantee employment, while a small number of postings on one day does not prove that an occupation has no opportunities.
